At Prairie Winds Elementary, all students will be empowered to communicate with confidence, cooperate with care, and respond to the world around them with empathy. Through intentional instruction and meaningful partnerships, the school counseling program fosters strong relationships, self-advocacy, and collaborative problem-solving. With these skills, students will contribute to a culture of safety, belonging, and growth—preparing them to explore a future full of possibility, in partnership with their families and community.
Mission
The Prairie Winds Elementary counseling program creates a safe, inclusive, and supportive space where every student’s voice is heard and valued. Through individual counseling, small groups, and classroom lessons, we nurture academic success, social-emotional growth, and a love of learning. By fostering empathy, resilience, and collaboration, we empower students to pursue their goals and thrive—reflecting our school’s commitment to lifelong learning and strong community partnerships.
Meet Our Counselor
The Prairie Winds Elementary School Counseling Program is led by Ms. Katie Brown, a dedicated educator and proud Pueblo native. With a Master's degree in School Counseling from Adams State University, Ms. Brown brings a passion for helping children grow into confident, compassionate, and capable individuals. Her journey began in unexpected places—like throwing birthday parties at Skate City—and led to a career in education, following the example of her mother and grandmother.
Through individual counseling, classroom lessons, and small group support, Ms. Brown helps students build essential skills in communication, cooperation, and problem-solving. She also leads schoolwide initiatives that promote Prairie Winds' social vision: "Prairie Winds Elementary is a safe, friendly place where everyone is included."
Services Offered
The Prairie Winds Elementary School Counseling Program provides a wide range of services to support the academic, social, and emotional well-being of all students. Our goal is to help every child feel connected, capable, and cared for—both in and out of the classroom.
Individual Counseling
Students can meet one-on-one with Ms. Brown to talk through personal, social, or academic concerns. Whether it’s navigating a friendship challenge, managing big emotions, or building confidence at school, this time provides students with a safe space to feel heard and supported.
For ongoing or long-term needs, referrals to outside counseling services are available. A list of community providers that represent a variety of identities, specialties, and insurance options can be shared upon request.
Small Group Counseling
Small groups bring together students with similar goals to learn and grow together. Topics may include impulse control, friendship skills, self-esteem, managing stress, or coping with grief. These groups help students build connections and practice strategies in a supportive setting.
Classroom Lessons
Interactive classroom lessons are taught regularly in every grade. Topics include empathy, conflict resolution, self-regulation, career exploration, and more—always aligned with the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors standards. These lessons help create a positive school climate and give students tools to thrive.
Academic Support
The counseling program also helps students develop study skills, time management strategies, and goal-setting habits. By working closely with teachers and families, Ms. Brown helps students find the tools they need to be successful learners.
Crisis Response
In times of crisis or emergency, the counseling program provides immediate support and helps coordinate next steps. Ms. Brown works closely with staff, caregivers, and community resources to ensure student safety and well-being.
College and Career Awareness
It’s never too early to start dreaming big! From career-themed lessons to hands-on activities, students begin to explore their interests, strengths, and the many opportunities that await them. We highlight real pathways available in our local high schools, including concurrent enrollment and CTE options.
Intermediate Student Leadership Groups
At Prairie Winds, we believe in growing leaders from the inside out. Our intermediate student leadership roles help students practice communication, teamwork, and service while building a stronger school community.
Mentors support younger students through weekly meetups focused on friendship, positive self-talk, and social-emotional growth.
Classroom Ambassadors assist in younger classrooms, modeling Twister PRIDE and offering a helping hand wherever it's needed.
Leadership Ambassadors take on school-wide projects like organizing events, tracking kindness coupons, and promoting school spirit.
New Student Ambassadors welcome new students by giving tours, playing at recess, and making sure every new face feels seen and supported.
We're here to support you and your child!

Great news! Great news! Our School Counseling program has been recognized by the American School Counselor Association as a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP). 🎉
This national distinction highlights our commitment to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program that supports every student’s academic growth, career development, and social-emotional well-being. The RAMP designation is awarded to programs that demonstrate measurable impact, align with the ASCA National Model, and use data to drive intentional, student-centered practices.
At Prairie Winds, this means our lessons, small groups, career exploration activities, and school-wide initiatives are thoughtfully designed to remove barriers to learning and help all students build the skills they need to succeed — both now and in the future. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and grateful for our staff, students, and families who partner with us in this important work! 💙
